BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China leads medal tally with 12 golds at Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics
China sits atop the medal table with 12 gold, nine silver and 12 bronze medals, with two days remaining before the close of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.
Para biathlon delivered the biggest medal haul for China, yielding eight gold, five silver and two bronze medals, highlighted by Cai Jiayun's brilliant triple victory in the men's sprint, sprint pursuit and individual standing events.
Wang Meng and Yang Jinqiao combined to win the inaugural wheelchair curling mixed doubles title as the event made its debut at Milan-Cortina.
2. China beats Chinese Taipei to advance into AFC Women's World Cup semifinals
China defeated Chinese Taipei 2-0 after extra time in the quarterfinals of the AFC Women's Asian Cup in Perth, Australia on March 14, securing a spot in the semifinals and at the same time a ticket to the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.
Shao Ziqin fired a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom-right corner in the 94th minute. Two minutes from time, an own goal from Chen Ying-hui doubled China's lead.
Defending champion China will face host Australia in their semifinal match on Tuesday.
3. "City Super Leagues" spotlighted by China's lawmakers, political advisors
During the ongoing sessions of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), lawmakers and advisors highlighted how leagues such as the Su Super League have drawn massive crowds and sparked a surge in public enthusiasm for the sport.
Officials said the leagues are not only energizing community participation but also driving consumption in tourism, entertainment and related industries. With more regions launching their own competitions, city super leagues are emerging as new platforms for regional cooperation, cultural exchange and sports-driven economic growth.
4. China's Wang Zhiyi ends An Se-young's streak to win All England title
China's Wang Zhiyi defeated South Korea's An Se-young 21-15, 21-19 to win the women's singles title at the All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham on March 8.
Wang claimed her first All England crown and ended a 10-match losing streak against the world No. 1 in their 23rd career meeting.
In the men's singles final, Chinese Taipei's Lin Chun-yi beat India's Lakshya Sen 21-15, 22-20 to claim his first BWF World Tour Super 1000 title. China's Liu Shengshu/Tan Ning and Chinese Taipei's Ye Hong-wei/Nicole Gonzales Chan won the women's and mixed doubles title respectively.
5. Russell beats Ferrari to win Shanghai F1 Sprint
Mercedes' George Russell held off a challenge from Ferrari to convert pole position into victory in an entertaining first Sprint race of the 2026 Formula 1 season on the Shanghai International Circuit on March 14.
After setting the fastest time in the qualifying session on March 13, Russell crossed the line just 0.6 seconds ahead of a charging Charles Leclerc. Leclerc's Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton finished in the third place.
In the afternoon, Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli became the youngest polesitter in F1 history after setting the fastest time in qualifying, while Russell was hindered by a battery issue.
