BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China holds that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) remains the cornerstone of the international non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament regime, as well as an indispensable pillar of the post-WWII international security architecture, Mao Ning, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, said on Monday.
Mao made the remarks when asked to comment on the failure of the 11th Review Conference of the NPT to adopt a final document, which was reportedly attributed to the divisions between the United States and Iran.
Mao said that the 11th Review Conference was held amid severe disruptions to global strategic balance and stability, while the multilateral arms control process has become increasingly politicized, bloc-based and fragmented.
"China regrets the conference's failure to reach a final document," she said.
The spokesperson said China attaches great importance to the role of the treaty and supports the universality, effectiveness and authority of the treaty.
China calls on all states parties to uphold multilateralism and the concept of common security, improve the international and regional security environment, earnestly safeguard global strategic stability, eliminate the root causes of the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and create more favorable conditions for orderly advancing the process of nuclear disarmament.
They should also peacefully resolve the hotspot issues related to nuclear non-proliferation through dialogue and negotiation, defend the legitimate rights of all countries to peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and fully leverage the important role of the NPT for peace and development in this era, said the spokesperson.
